ABSTRACT
Ornamental fish generates more revenue for countries that deal on it. The United State (US) and the European countries are the world’s largest market for ornamental fish. Ornamental fish has beautiful colours and they are mostly small in size but there are also some large ones. They exhibit wonderful display and have different methods of breeding. Their behaviors and life span differ from one species to the other. They are found in salt water, brackish water, and fresh water. Ornamental fish is not practiced in large scale in Nigeria due to little or no knowledge about ornamental fish keeping and the opportunities one can get from it. This seminar enlightens minds about the socio-economic benefits of ornamental fishes which includes; serving as an aesthetic appeal, helping people make productive use of leisure time, bringing enlightenment for persons of every age, serving as tourist attraction centre, helping people work with nature and also appreciating it, it increases sense of responsibility there by making one environmentally aware, creating job opportunities, promoting trade in both exporting and importing of ornamental fish, boosting the finance of the economy through eco-tourism it gives. There are also medical benefits which include; reduction of hypertension, control of pulse rate and accelerating learning process. In accordance, the government should encourage young graduates to go into ornamental fish farming by making loans available for them. Facilities should be provided for correct sustenance and maintenance of ornamental fish. Aquarium keeping should be encouraged in homes and if possible a public aquarium should be built. Professionals in the industry should train farmers and enlighten the general public on ornamental fish farming. More so, a workshop should be organized to enlighten people about the various socio-economic benefits derived from ornamental fish farming. Ornamental fish should be practiced in the country due to its great social-economic benefits.
